How to Keep Your Business Premises Safe During the Calgary Winter

A part of owning a business in Calgary that people rarely talk about is prevention. As you already know by now, owning a small business isn't all flowers and rainbows. It comes with many different challenges and hardships -- and keeping it safe is definitely among them.

With summer behind us, many small business owners in Calgary might be wondering how they can go about keeping their businesses safe during the cold and harsh upcoming Albertan winter. While winter comes with many risks associated with the other three seasons, winter is also when the most fire claims occur. Surprised? Well most people are.

As a result, fire prevention should be your first priority in the winter. But it shouldn't be your only one. Here is how you can keep your business premises safe during the Calgary winter:

  • Make sure that your smoke alarms are in working order. When was the last time you checked them? The City of Calgary recommends that you check them at least once a year to make sure that they are working properly.
  • Keep valuable (and flammable) objects away from sight.  Don't make your business premises a target of thieves and arsonists by not following this one basic tip.
  • Deter trespassers any way you can. Whether you decide to keep your business premises lit 24/7 or invest in a gate system, the most important thing is that you think like a thief.
  • Make a fire evacuation plan and make sure that your employees follow it to a t. We can't stress enough the importance of doing this.
Now that you know how to keep your business premises safe, it's time to go out there and implement those easy and simple tips!
